About 10-20% of women suffer from depression, anxiety or other distressing emotional reactions during pregnancy or after childbirth. This translates to about 800,000 mothers a year in the U.S. Many women struggle with similar symptoms after a miscarriage, a still birth, losing a baby, around their menstrual cycle, when dealing with infertility, or around menopause. Though hormonal changes are often not a factor, around the time of adopting a baby or older child a parent can experience significant emotional distress. Even men deal with such difficulties. Most women (and nearly all men) do not receive proper support and treatment for these conditions.
